I am reading up a lot on branding this week for a current project, and i came across brandchannel.com’s Brand Profiles, great articles on some of the biggest, and some of the smaller but very interesting brands of the planet. Here are three candy-size infobytes from my reading… fascintaing stuff!
“In June 2003, IKEA became the first European company to use its own trains to transport goods. The company says it will be able to ship the equivalent of 60 trucks a day via IKEA Rail while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 70 percent.” ((IKEA profile)
“At the time of joining L’Occitane, Geiger had the bright idea of capitalizing on the success of best-selling book A year in Provence by Peter Mayle. Adding “Provence” to the brand’s name, L’Occitane became, as it is known today, “L’Occitane en Provence.” ‘At first, I wasn’t sure about associating our name with Provence,’ said Geiger in an interview with the French press. ‘But studies showed that the name was very positive, and evoked beautiful things and odors in people’s minds’” ((L’Occitane en Provence profile)
Roots, the very Canadian sports brand was actually founded by Americans. ” The company was founded by Michael Budman and Don Green, two college friends from Detroit, Michigan, with a flair for sports and a lifestyle of leisure. The two entrepreneurs had met during summer camp in the Canadian Algonquins in the 1960s and developed a passion for the Canadian outdoors. In 1973, the young men moved to Canada and started a clothing business that expressed their fascination with the “Canadian way of life.”” (Roots profile)
Just three of the great stories there.
